History of Sterling Silver Cufflinks Cufflinks were first worn in the 17th century. Back then, men thought of something more elegant for their shirt other than bows and ties. At first, sterling cufflinks were merely small chains fastened to the end of a gold or silver button. The chains were inserted through the holes of the cuffs to keep them together. In the advent of Industrial Revolution, there came a high production of low-cost cufflinks. This brought about an increase in the variety of cufflinks that were manufactured. Instead of chains, sterling silver cufflinks are now fastened with rods and clips. At the same time, shirt makers went with the market flow by selling cufflink-ready formal dress shirts. And so the cufflink industry went to its all-time boom. Today cufflinks have become a staple in every man’s wardrobe. Men who developed a keen fashion sense know how to wear cufflinks for tuxedo and formal attire. Sterling cufflinks are adorned by myriad kinds of stones, fabrics and metals such as silver, gold, silk, onyx and mother of pearl. Nineteenth century opened up a new market for cufflinks. Businessmen of different fields began wearing cufflinks for casual attire. The designs became more creative and unique, totally deviating from the classic and conservative styles of the previous era. Not only that. Sterling cufflinks also became affordable to middle-class men (and now, women) who wanted to lavish with the same sophistication. However, the cufflinks industry has also experienced a decrease in sales when shirt manufacturers began producing dress and tuxedo shirts with cuff buttons. Such downtime did not last too long though as men began understanding the difference between function and style. Find out more about Mens fashion at Askmen.com! |
